Fulfilling our Civic Duty

Dear Friends:

Let’s face it, we are bombarded daily with information and lots of misinformation that often leaves our heads spinning about what is true or false. In this unusual election season during COVID-19, many voters and most especially our senior citizens are conflicted about when, where and how to best cast their votes safely.

In the past, we would simply go out and vote–almost on autopilot. We did our research, set aside time to vote on Election Day and took our sample ballots with us to our polling locations. If we had absentee ballots, we filled them out and mailed them–no questions asked. This year with the pandemic, we are asked to weigh different options. At best, this can be confusing for us all and particularly difficult for older adults unaccustomed to such change.

Many seniors take great pride in fulfilling their civic duty to vote. Voting is a privilege and a right which many in this country fought hard to obtain. By exercising our right to vote in 2020, we are not only selecting our next US President, but will be making decisions affecting how our local and state governments will operate and selecting the representatives who will vote on laws and budgets impacting our future. At stake are issues such as affordable housing, school administration, economic recovery, racial equity, policing and reform measures, to name a few.

Voting is an awesome responsibility we hold dear in America. If you have not already done so, I urge everyone to make a plan and vote. Read more about ways to make voting easier and safer and especially how we can assist our seniors.

We’re also still dealing with the pandemic and there are concerns about whether a new wave of infections is coming and what will happen when the flu season hits. If you are wondering if it is safe to go out and get a flu shot, keep in mind our public health officials are urging each of us to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Find out more about how we can navigate these all important medical decisions.

Stay safe,

Syd
