New Senior Housing Project Coming

Like so many communities in California, the population in Redding has grown tremendously and could benefit from additional housing to meet the needs of its low-income residents. About 10 years ago, CCH explored the possibility of developing an affordable housing complex in Redding but the project was put on hold because of a lack of available funding. Given the continued population growth and expanding need for more available senior housing, the CCH development team is looking to revitalize the project and is reaching out to the local community for feedback.

“This is an excellent time to expand Redding’s affordable housing and we’d like to engage with members of the local community,” shares Project Manager Jevon Allen of Real Estate Development. “The city has awarded CCH housing vouchers that would provide funding and enable this project to move forward.”

In the next few weeks, CCH will be distributing door hangers with project information to neighbors in the adjacent neighborhood. “We are encouraging neighbors to contact us directly to be added to our marketing list so they can receive project information, construction updates and be notified about future community meetings where they can have their questions answered,” Jevon shares.

The door hangers are the first step in CCH’s community outreach efforts. “In this COVID-19 era, we are working with safeguards in mind to think of creative ways to get the word out,” says Jevon. “We value the partnership with our neighbors and want to ensure they are kept informed of the latest developments as the project moves forward.”

The Piper Way Senior Housing project, to be located at 3592 Placer Street in Redding, would serve low and very-low income seniors, age 62 and older. In keeping with CCH’s mission, the project would be 100% affordable housing. As proposed, the 60-unit community would include:

  • A single two-story building and one three-story unit structure with a driveway and surface parking wrapping around the front and side of the building;
  • Fifty-nine one-bedroom apartments with living room, kitchen and bath facilities, individual heating/cooling system, dishwasher and data/phone connection; plus
  • Community amenities to include a sitting lobby, laundry room, multipurpose room, administrative offices, craft room and community garden.

The current site sits on 2.89 acres of vacant land located about 1.5 miles from downtown Redding. A full-service shopping center is conveniently located nearby and bus services runs daily from the neighborhood to the downtown travel center.

In planning for the development of the senior complex, CCH is committed to using sustainable design strategies, including LEED equivalent certification, and intends to build the apartments to perform better than current Title 24 energy standards. “It is CCH’s belief that green building strategies create healthier homes for our seniors, lower energy costs and will help reduce the carbon footprint for the environment,” shares CCH Director of Real Estate Development Sidney Stone.  “We look forward to bringing this low-income, senior housing development to the Redding community.”
